Builders from across the country are teaming up this week for Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz, an annual event where builders work on repairing or constructing homes for those in need. Hundreds of builders across 32 cities within 17 states are participating this year to deliver more affordable homes in their area during the week, BUILDER online reports.
Habitat, partnering with Ply Gem, teamed with local builders, manufacturers, and suppliers to build or repair 80 homes between June 5 and June 9 across the country. For this year, Habitat and Ply Gem have partnered with more than 200 families to repair or build homes for low-income families or deserving families.
Since the first local event in 2002, Home Builders Blitz has had more than 2,000 builders participate across 300-plus communities, and have built more than 1,700 homes (housing more than 4,290 people).
“The idea of the one-week blitz is that if you asked me as a builder to build a house in a month for Habitat, I couldn’t do it, because I have other obligations,” says Tom Gipson, founder and national chairman of Home Builders Blitz. “But if you can compress that time and enable a builder to do it in one week, it makes it very manageable amount of time to build the home.”
Home Builder Blitz became a national initiative in 2006 through Habitat for Humanity and a way to urge local builders to donate their time and services for one week to help people in need of housing.
